History of the Show
Roughleys Bike Show was set up in 1999, by Andy Roughley who at the time was working at the Bulls Head public house on the August bank holiday. While working to amuse himself he invited some of his mates to come down and meet up. For there own amusement they asked the market buskers to come down and play some tunes for them which went down a storm.
They decided to do this again the next year but also to put some bikes on show this time. The first show was actually called The Bulls Head bike show. This became so popular they did it year after year with the bike show getting bigger and bigger until we reached the standards we have today. In the years following Roughleys Bike Show has extended to include Christmas Toy Runs and Easter Egg Runs. Both of which have proven rather popular with hundreds of eggs and gifts are donated and hundred of bikers dressing up and joining in the fun as our photos will show. There has also been a few other events on over the past years, for example, Roughleys Bike Show part 2 in October 2009 which helped to raise money for a local boy, Harley Slack. Also in March 2010 some of the committee did a sponsored abseil to raise money for the Rainbow Trust.
Now a bit about the charities that are supported.
The 3 charities supported have remained the same due to being very close to the hearts of the committee members. The three charities we support are; The National Association for Bikers with a Disability (N.A.B.D), The Rainbow Trust Childrens Charity and The Together Trust.
The N.A.B.D was set up in April 1991 by six bikers who would not accept the idea that disabled people could not ride motorcycles, scooters or trikes. The initial project was to find a way to adapt a motorcycle for a rider who had suffered an amputation of his lower left leg in an accident. A fundraising party was organized and published locally and this promoted several other disabled people to contact the group and ask whether it was possible that they could ride motorcycles. Within the first 12 months, the N.A.B.D had over 100 members and had helped 3 riders get back on motorcycles independently. Each adaption had to be designed from scratch, the money raised and the engineering problems solved, but from this small beginning the N.A.B.D was to become the world leader in the field of motorcycling with a disability.
The Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity provides emotional and practical support to families who have a child with a life-threatening or terminal illness. Rainbow Trust’s family support workers join the family in their own home and are there to provide practical support. Contactable 24 hours a day for families in crisis, be it from diagnosis, through treatment and even after bereavement.
The Together Trust provides a wide range of social care, special education, community support and even consultancy services. We are also a registered domiciliary care agency for children and adults and are one of the largest voluntary providers of residential services from short-term emergency care to long-term.
